FAQs

How long before my wedding should I aim to visit you to look for my wedding dress?

This is entirely up to you, every bride is different. We have brides who visit us up to a year in advance of their wedding day, and brides who visit when they are only a few weeks away from their big day. Because our dresses are one-off vintage pieces they are available in the boutique there and then, and unlike modern dresses they do not have to be ordered or made in advance for you, so when you find your perfect dress you take it away with you right after your appointment.

Finding your dress is one of the most fun and most important parts of your wedding planning process. It can be really great if you find your dress early on so that you can plan other aspects of the day’s style around it, such as your theme, your flowers, your hair and make-up and your bridesmaid dresses. Choosing your dress early on also allows you time for any alterations you want to make and to find the perfect accessories for your dress.

Should I do a lot of research about wedding dress styles before I visit?

It can be helpful to have had a think about what era, style, fabric and colour of dress you think you might like and that would suit your type of wedding, and to be aware of what styles suit your body type, but don’t get too hung up on what you think you want. Don’t come along glued to the idea of wearing a particular design of dress you’ve found on Pinterest or in a magazine because you need to remember that our dresses are one off vintage pieces so you’ll never find the same style as one you come across.

Equally it’s also ok to come along and visit us having no clue at all about what you think you’d like to wear. We’re here to help you find your perfect dress and love working with you to make sure you find your special dress.

Always be open to any suggestions about trying on gowns your bridal stylist has for you. Remember they are experienced bridal stylists who know the collection inside out so they will know what styles will and won’t work for your body type.

Are your wedding dresses original vintage dresses?

Yes, all our wedding dresses are original vintage pieces dating from Edwardian times through to the 1990s. This means they are all unique, one-off pieces with their own true rarity and romantic history.

All of the dresses in the collection are chosen because they are beautiful, glamorous dresses and because they are wonderful examples of each era’s styles. Each dress is also selected because of the high quality of its design, fabric and craftsmanship.

Our dresses are a little bit quirky, modest, a bit more alternative and often quite rock n roll, so they provide the perfect alternative to modern wedding dresses. We specialise in beautiful, easy to wear, romantic dresses you won’t find anywhere else. And as with our fashion collections, every item is expertly cleaned and restored before it arrives in the boutique.

Please remember that our dresses are real vintage pieces. They aren’t vintage style or modern / current dresses. This means that you won’t find current bridal trends or designs in the collection, for example you won’t find sheer designs, 2 piece sets with crop tops, backless or deep v front designs, or very sparkly rhinestone covered designs. These are all modern trends, and dresses like these won’t be part of a vintage collection like ours for some considerable time yet.

What sizes do you stock?

We always try very hard to have the widest selection of sizes of wedding dresses available in the boutique as possible, but sadly it is true that vintage dresses, and in particular vintage wedding dresses, are a lot smaller than modern dresses. This means that most of our collection tends to range in size between a modern UK size 6 to a size 14. We find it very difficult to find vintage wedding dresses above a size 14 because people were so much smaller in both height, bone structure and build in times gone by. Our figures have changed a lot over time as a result of our lifestyle and eating choices and we must remember that many generations ago, people had to live during periods of rationing.

However, we are always sourcing new dresses and adding to our collection so it is always worth checking about size availability with us.

It is also true that there are many ways a skilled dressmaker can make dresses fit when they are too small or too big, and they can also be re-modelled to your taste.

How many dresses do you have in stock?

We have around 175 vintage wedding dresses in stock in our collection at any one time.

What accessories do you stock?

In both our Bridal Boutique and or Vintage Fashion Boutique we have a beautiful range of bridal accessories from veils, tiaras, headdresses and hats, to jewellery, handbags, gloves, parasols and fur wraps, stoles and capes.

What is the price range of your wedding dress collection?

The price range of our vintage wedding dress collection can vary depending on the dresses we have in stock at any one time. In general however, the majority of our collection normally ranges in price from £300 to £900, with some very special and rare pieces priced above this, and some below.

Do I need to book an appointment to visit Those Were The Days Vintage Bridal Boutique?

Yes, we open our bridal boutique on an appointment only basis so you do need to book an appointment to be able to visit. Our appointments are one hour long and are very relaxed and fun and you will be the only bridal party in the boutique at that time. Each bride gets a private appointment with a dedicated bridal stylist so that you have our undivided attention and access to our full collection.

We are open by appointment only from Tuesday to Saturday.

How long in advance do I need to book an appointment?

We would recommend making an appointment at least 2-3 weeks in advance from the date you’d like to visit, especially for appointments on Fridays and Saturdays which are always super busy. However, we’re happy to make bookings up to 3 months or even further in advance if you’re travelling to see us and need to plan your trip. As soon as you decide you would like to visit us simply send us an email via our booking link on this website, or call us on 0131 225 4400 and we will find an appointment time that works for you.

Can I cancel my appointment?

Yes of course you can, but please give us at least 24 hours notice. We plan our scheduling and staffing up to a week in advance so we would appreciate you giving us as much notice as possible. Equally we are also always happy to re-schedule an appointment for you.

How long will my appointment last?

All of our appointments are scheduled for one hour. Please be on time. Each day’s appointments are tightly scheduled and there is no room for appointments to start early or to run on late.

If you arrive late, that time will be deducted from your scheduled hour. For example, if your appointment is scheduled for 10:30 am but you arrive at 10:45, then you will only have 45 minutes left for your appointment to shop.

If you arrive early, please feel free to go for coffee, or have a wander around our sister store Those Were The Days Vintage Fashion Boutique which is located right next door to our bridal boutique, or our other neighbouring shops, until your appointment start time because we unfortunately don’t have anywhere for you to wait, and will not have the flexibility to start your appointment early.

How many people can accompany me to the fitting?

We would suggest you invite no more than three guests to come along with you so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. This way we can focus on you. We are a small intimate boutique, and don’t have lots of room or seating for a large entourage. We believe trying on dresses should be fun and stress free and have found that the opinions of a few trusted people always makes for a far more enjoyable shopping experience for our brides. Remember, it’s your day and it’s your dress so you should first and foremost listen to what you think. This isn’t a day for other family members to re-live their weddings or to choose dresses they would have liked.

That said we are very relaxed here so if you would like to bring one or 2 more guests we are happy to go along with that if you let us know in advance.

Can I take photos of the dresses?

No, we don’t allow any photos or videos to be taken of our dresses during the appointment.

What underwear should I wear to my appointment?

We would recommend you wear nude / skin coloured underwear to your appointment as any other colours will show through the dresses. Spanx are always the best underwear to wear under a wedding dress as they help ensure a smooth line under the fabric.

Can I wear make-up or fake tan to my appointment?

No, unfortunately we will not be able to let you try on any dresses if you wear fake tan or heavy make up to your appointment. Please also remove your lipstick and don’t wear any perfume. We need your help to keep all of our dresses in pristine bridal condition because they aren’t samples and will all be another bride’s wedding dress one day.

Please ensure you do wear deodorant to your appointment.

What shoes should I wear to my appointment?

If you have flat shoes or heels the height you think you would like to wear on your wedding day, then it’s a good idea to bring them with you to your appointment to help you gauge dress lengths.

Don’t worry if you forget to bring any though because we have some pairs of heels in the boutique you can try on in your appointment.

What are your policies on reserving dresses?

Unfortunately, as we only stock one-off pieces, we aren’t able to hold dresses aside.

Can I take my dress home with me after my appointment?

Yes, all brides who find their dresses take them home with them after their appointment. Due to the size of our boutique we unfortunately aren’t able to store dresses for our brides.

We will pack your dress into a breathable gown bag so that you can transport it easily. You can also store your dress in this gown bag at home.

What are your payment options and policies?

We take payment in full at the time of purchase. We accept all major credit and debit cards (except for American Express) and you can also pay in cash.

Do you offer refunds or exchanges?

No, all sales are final. Because our pieces are vintage, no refunds or exchanges are available.

Do you offer alterations?

We don’t have an in-house seamstress because most of our brides tend not to need any alterations or only require minimal alterations, however we can recommend several high quality and very experienced local alterations experts.

What’s the best way to wash the dress before the wedding?

All of the wedding dresses in our collection are professionally cleaned before they arrive in the boutique so unless you have a disaster before the wedding there should be no need to re-clean your dress before you wear it.

Never attempt to wash your dress at home yourself or to use a domestic iron on it. Always take it to a professional and recommended specialist dry cleaning company and please be aware that all dry cleaning carries some risk to a vintage garment.

Do you sell Bridesmaid and Mother of the Bride and Groom outfits?

Our sister store, Those Were The Days Vintage fashion boutique is located right next door to our bridal store and has a wonderful selection of vintage cocktail and evening dresses and suits that make perfect bridesmaid and mother of the bride and groom outfits. It is open Tuesday to Saturday and you don’t need an appointment to pop in and view our fashion collections.
